A Small Town Parade
As usual, my little town kicked off the unofficial beginning of summer with a Memorial Day parade. Truth be told- I really don't like parades. The sound of glockenspiels is enough to make my skin crawl. This though was a very nice parade. There were the ubiquitous Revolutionary War re-enactors, the school bands, the fire brigades from the adjoining towns. The were scout troops and the little league. There were some very welcomed Fellini-esque moments as well- the freshly waxed and polished fleet of trucks from the local sewage company and a twelve foot high fiberglass cow bearing a sign for Turkey Hill Ice Cream. But more than anything, there was an overwhelming sense of community. There were grandparents with their grandchildren saluting the flag. There was applause as war veterans waved from vintage Cadillacs. There were neighbors with lemonade. There were smiles. There was candy!
