Being a photographer of a certain age, my camera of choice at one time was a Nikon FM- with a motor drive and 35mm lens. A beautiful workhorse camera that never let me down. Never. That is until photo labs started to close and the rest of the world went digital. I still shoot film when I can, but I too got myself a fancy digital SLR. One I could still use my favorite Nikon lenses with. It's a big camera. A really big camera. The kind of big that makes it uncomfortable to have with me all the time. Unfortunately I would find I'd need it all the time to capture the latent images in my constant view. One day a year or so ago I decided to get myself a pocket sized point and shoot camera. A camera I can have on me all the time. It even fits in the side tool pocket of my Carhartt work pants. Getting this camera changed my life. I no longer obsess over the image I couldn't grasp. It's a tool to aid in expressing what I perceive at any given moment. Yet- it's only a little consumer grade point and shoot camera, available at any electronics or big box store. Yet again- I've taken more images in the short time I've had it than I have with my faithful Nikon in the previous ten years. It certainly has not replaced all of my other cameras. It is just another tool in the bag-or pants. A tool that on a very atmospheric morning I don't have to kick myself for not having. |
