Through The Eyes of an Eight Year Old

If your the kind of parent who would rather bring your kids to an art gallery before ANY sporting event, you know how gratifying it is to share their quest for self expression. On a recent family trip to NYC, armed with her own twelve megapixel multifunction whiz-bang digital camera (with Leica lens) strapped around her little wrist, Giovanna immersed herself in capturing the city as she saw it. A far cry from the Kodak Brownie I myself looked at the world through when I was eight years old. (No- I'm not THAT old! It just happened to be my grandmother's Brownie.) Watching G go through the process of "looking" through this camera and transcend it's bells and whistles was both fascinating and emotional- with purity of vision trumping all! Now children have a hard enough time without their parents trying to influence their every move and I'm not for an instant going to delude myself into thinking my daughters won't come home one day with lacrosse sticks or soccer balls (gawdfabid!), but for the meantime I'm going to relish this moment in their lives and hope they will always have the need to express themselves in some creative way, be it photography, painting, music, or literature. It looks like I might now have to get someone a Leica with a Leica lens.
